Fashion Models

Fashion models are probably what most people think of when they think of models in general. These are the models that you see in glossy magazines, in designer clothing advertising, and on the runway or catwalk. They are the most widely known because some of these models have reached celebrity status. Who hasn't heard of Cindy Crawford for example?

Celebrity Fashion Models

Just because some of these models have achieved such stardom, you shouldn't be deceived into thinking that fashion modeling is all about glitz and glamour. Of course, for those at the very top there is a lot of money to be made (Millions of dollars each year) and there is the lifestyle of jetting around from California, to New York to the fashion capitals of Europe ( such as London or Milan). But how did these models get there.

Being discovered as a fashion model

The chances of being discovered passively are incredibly small. Although this it the dream of many young girls, the truth is it very rarely happens. In order to get somewhere in life, you have to go out and get what you want, and this is no different in the world of fashion modeling as it is in any other walk of life. Take Cindy Crawford for example. She set off with her father from Dekalb Chicago and started banging on the doors of model agents. She too had to deal with rejection but she did not let this put her off. So if you are considering a career as a fashion model , the first thing to know is that you are going to have to actively pursue this dream, not wait around hoping !

How competitive is the world of fashion modeling

In one word, extremely competitive.This is the dream of so many girls and many of them are prepared to put with anything to pursue this dream. In order to relocate for example to the primary fashion markets, models may find themselves living out of a suitcase or living in extremely cramped flats in an atmosphere of intense rivalry.

The different forms of Fashion modeling

The are many different forms of fashion modeling .Perhaps the best known is

Fashion Runway Modeling

This is perhaps the best known of all the forms of modeling. It is the fashion show modeling that really for many defines the world of modeling. Fashion shows tend to take place every Fall and Spring, and they are an opportunity for fashion designers to show off their creations to prospective store buyers.It is vital that the model knows how to really show off the designs, and to make them move and hang properly.here are very strict height figure and age requirements to being a fashion runway model ( tall , slim and young). The work is extremely well paid and hectic.

Fashion Editorial Modeling

This is the world of fashion magazines, the world of Vogue,Cosmo etc .These magazines fill their editorials with fashion advice and predictions for the future .Editorial work is not as well paid as other types of modeling but it gives the model a great deal of exposure which can propel her career. It also gives you the all important tear sheets - the gold standard of the modeling industry and the means through which a model proves what she has accomplished in the fashion world.Also, fashion editorial work can often be experimental , allowing the model to show more unusual or extreme styles.

Fashion Catalog Modeling

This is modeling for the fashion catalogs, and it is well paid primarily because of you are chosen , you will receive so many shoots. It can days weeks or even months to shoot for a catalogue, and you may be around for many of those hours.The type of model required for fashion catalog modeling is generally the ideal for the market that is being targeted. So a catalog dealing with current fashions aimed at younger people will be looking for tall , slender young beautiful girls to model their products and to make the consumer think that if bought the clothes on offer, they could create an impression which is as dazzling as the photo.

Fashion Print Modeling

This is fashion modeling for fashion print advertisements - often advertising an item of a designers collection. This work is extremely demanding, the skill level of the model has to be very high - you will have to capture the essence of what the designer wants to show - you will have to show that you can work in harmony with design professions and sometimes intuitively give them exactly what they want in terms of effect. Because of the experience level required and the skill, the pay for this type of work is extremely high. Models at this level will probably have lawyers negotiating usage rights of the final images which serve to increase the amount of money the model will receive.

Fashion Showroom Modeling

This work involves working in the designer studios, modeling the designer's latest creations for potential buyers.The atmosphere is of course more relaxed than at say a fashion show but you must be prepared to be on your feet all day

Fashion Lingerie Modeling

Modeling fashion lingerie is obviously more revealing than other forms of fashion modeling, so your body tone and proportions must be very good

Fashion Fitness Modeling

This is one of the fastest growing areas in the modeling industry. The late 90s and early part of this century has seen a shift towards fitness as an extremely desirable lifestyle. In the late 80s for example, fitness was not so high on the list of desirable lifestyles.This shift has of course invigorated the market for sportswear and thus increased the demand for fashion fitness modeling. Models involved in this field may model sports clothes, and may well appear in health or fitness magazines .Fitness models may also appear on the weightlifting and bodybuilding market. Of course you must have an extremely well toned and developed body to fit the part and you must be beautiful with it. Such models are a rarity , and the right model can expect to be well paid.

Most people think of fashion modeling when they think of the world of models in general but there is a lot more to modeling than that. For those who feel that fashion modeling may not be for them, then commercial modeling can offer a less stressful yet extremely well paid alternative

What is Commercial Modeling - Lifestyle and Product

Commercial modeling generally comes in 2 major divisions lifestyle models and product models. Product models are used to sell a product for a client are there work is often done in close association with that product. A good example might be a mobile phone advert. There you will see models in scenes designed to sell mobile phones - they will be there happily ringing or texting somebody about some event , holding the phone in a certain way to show it off and generally giving the association of the product with youth , beauty and fun.
Lifestyle models on the other hand tend to depict lifestyles or ideas and are generally not so closely associated with a product. For example, a retired couple walking on a beach gazing out into the sea may be used to generate interest in a retirement fund.

Corporate Commercial Models

Corporate Commercial models are very similar to lifestyle models, but they have a business type theme.

Product Demo and Trade Show Modeling

These are areas where new models often start their modeling careers. They are great places to start, in that you learn how to start interacting with the public and you can build up your confidence - two qualities which will prove extremely important if you are to have a successful career. Product Demo Modeling receives perhaps the lowest pay in terms of commercial modeling. It is where models may stand in malls outside shops for example handing out leaflets. Trade Show Models are used to hand out literature at trade show booths. In both cases, the model is used to attract people to them so that they can hand out the marketing material and perhaps also associate the marketing material with an attractive young outlook.

The Life of a Commercial Model

Whereas fashion modeling is generally depicted as being full of intense rivalry and extremely hard to break into, commercial modeling tends to be less intense in this regard and top commercial models have been know to command fees of $3000 or more.

The skills and requirements to be a commercial model are different to those of a fashion model. This is primarily because the term commercial modeling is really vast, and it covers so many different areas.

When I first decided that I wanted to become a model I wasn't;t sure exactly which type of modeling I wanted to go into. We've all seen the runway models in New York and many people think that's basically all there is to modeling.Yet as you can see from this and the other articles on this site, there are many other areas and one which is well known but often overlooked by models considering a career in modeling is glamour modeling.

What is glamour modeling?

Glamour modeling is different to the other forms of modeling in that it generally is not associated with a product or service. For example, fashion models are there to show off the clothes of fashion designers, to make them move and flow and to draw attention to areas of particular interest .Similarly commercial modeling is there usually to sell an idea or product. For example,advertisements selling electronics or chewing gum for example will employ commercial models to impart some of their attraction onto the goods themselves. This is apparently known as transference ! Photos of glamour models are not generally used to sell a product or idea. Glamour photos are photos with a sexual theme. We've all seen the calendars or posters with bikini clad models on the beach - these are glamour models.

Types of Glamour Modeling

Glamour modeling comes in many forms - from bikini models and swimsuit models to some forms of lingerie modeling. There is actually quite a lot of debate about what the difference is between fetish, adult and glamour models. Well for me, glamour modeling is all about suggestion and implication. Once you move to anything more than this, you are entering the world of adult modeling which I would not advise any would be model to do.

Getting work as a Glamour Model

Most model agencies do not get involved with glamour modeling. Model agencies generally work for clients who are trying to advertise services or ideas and they supply these clients with models who fit that product or who say what the client is trying to say. Because glamour models do not generally sell products, they do not fall within this category. As a result, glamour models can find it hard to find work .A common source of work is through the internet. There are some sites devoted purely to the world of glamour modeling and they tend to have forums where glamour models and photographers are put in touch with each other. Needless to say, andy glamour model considering finding work in this way should be extremely careful. There are a lot of weirdos out there and many of them would perhaps like nothing more than to photograph you in a bikini. Personally, I would never go to a shoot with a stranger without a strapping chaperone. Be particularly careful of the photographer who describes himself as a 'semi-pro'. When you have found a photographer, always ask for samples of his or her work, and references, and check out those references to make sure everything is in order.

The Life of a Fashion Model

When most people think of modeling they think of fashion modeling - they think of beautiful slim models walking up and down the catwalks of Paris,the big money,the world wide travel,the celebrity lifestyle. This is of course because a few fashion models have achieved the status of celebrity and they are to be seen everywhere, on the TV, in glossy magazines, at hollywood parties. This is what attracts most girls to modeling.
Yet what you see here is the end product of modeling. It is the achievement of a girls dreams. What you do not see is all the hard work that went into reaching this level, al the disappointments, the endless meetings, the incredible competition, the intense rivalry. The truth is, to make it in the fashion modeling business you have to be incredibly tough and organized. You have to have the ability to get up again when you have a set back, you have to have the character not to lose heart when everything seems to be going against you, and you need the natural talent.

As far as natural talent goes, you should find out pretty early on whether you have what it takes to become a fashion model .Fashion modeling has extremely strict requirements as far as your body measurements go, you have to be above a minimum height and you have to be extremely thin in order to fit into the clothes that you are modeling.

If you decide that the fashion modeling world is for you then be prepared for some hard work and quite a few disappointments.If you have an agent who can get you to castings then you should be prepared to have a lot of meetings before actually getting anywhere. There is an element of practice required before you get an understanding of how you should be in this casting environment. Don't worry and above all don't be disheartened if the first few castings go badly. Just as with job interviews, you need a few practice goes before you start to get into the swing of things. Once you know what kind of environment to expect,things will go a lot better.

You should also remember that once you do get a job ( and this really is an achievment) the pay won't be that great at first. you may well find yourself doing a lot of travel in the early years which itslef can be very exhausting. of course there is no chance of furthering your education and sometimes your standard of accommodation can be poor. Models can well end up living in fairly cramped conditions together in the major European capitals, and it is sometimes in this settng that you may come across drugs, eating disorders, mental exhaustion etc.

It should be said here, I'm not trying to put would be models off fashion modeling, but I am pointing out that it is not just about your figure and your look, it is about your character, your resilience - can you take stress, pressure and disappointment and still come out literally looking like the most beautiful girl on earth. If you can then you are truly exceptional and this is why so few girls make it in this highly competitive industry.
It is of course the competition that makes it so tough to make it as a fashion model. This is why you may well do well to look at other options. Modeling is a huge industry and fashion modeling is just one part. Turn on the television and watch a car advert, or a watch advert or a cell phone advert. The people in these commercials will be good looking but often not incredibly stunning - so who are they ? What is their role ? THese are the commercial models and their world is well worth considering for any would be models.
The competition within commercial modeling is less intense despite the fact that it can be very well paid. The other advantage is that commercial models can remain in employment for far longer than fashion models, who are considered too old when they are actually still quite young !

Commercial models will appear on the TV, in catalogues, on billboards etc. There is a lot of work for commercial models and you are chosen according to how well you suit the product you are advertising. So age restrictions are relaxed and so is the concentration on height and figure. Commercial models can sometimes be referred to as lifestyle models. They are bascially attractive people who we identify with - who basically look pretty much like us.

Alternatives to Modeling

It has been said many times now that although fashion is the best known form of modeling, and perhaps the one that most people think of when they think modeling, there are many other forms of modeling that can also pay well and that can be far less stressful on the individual.
Take commercial modeling for example - being paid maybe $1000 for posing with a cell phone - that may suit some people far better than the hectic life of a fashion model. But how do you break into the world of commercial modeling - where do you start ?
The most common way to start is with what's known as a composite card or a comp card. This is basically a card with about 5 pictures that should be fairly natural looking. You will certainly need a good commercial photographer to achieve the kind of look you want for a comp card, and that can be fairly hard to find. If you are lucky enough to find a good professional photographer, then you can start sending your card to model agencies or better yet visit them personally.
There are of course other ways. Girls who may be interested for example in fitness modeling can find success by attending fitness conventions. If you have the right look ( you have great muscular definition as well as beauty ) then it is said that fitness modeling can be relatively easy to break into. The problem is that it is at first not particularly well paid, but any publicity you get at the outset can obviously launch your career to something much bigger. The internet is said to be another good source of fitness models.
On the other hand, if you do not have the muscular definition of a fitness model then how about getting into the world of tv commercials. If this is your thing, send a few headshots to various casting directors, and if you are successful then you will be given an audition.
The best way to prepare for auditions, conventions and the like is practice practice proactive. You have to prepare yourself as well as possible by thinking the event through, but there is no substitute for experience. If you can, it is often a really good idea to have a go at auditioning for parts that you do not particularly want - you are there merely to improve your technique, so that when something you really want comes along you will be ready.

Of course if you are the more daring type you could also consider glamour modeling. Unlike the other types of modeling which are directed towards a particular product ( fashion models are there to demonstrate clothes, commercial models are used to demonstrate products ) glamour models are often there purely to, well, provide glamour ! With glamour modeling, you will have to be prepared for at least partial nudity. You will of course have to be at least 18 years old and as with all areas of modeling you should be extremely careful about who you are photographed by and which agency you affiliate yourself with. You should always have samples of work and references. Glamour models often use less conventional methods of finding work such as the internet since modeling agencies do not always provide work in this area. If you are using a web photographer for example, be especially careful and it may be a good idea to have a chaperone at all times.

Male Models -

Most of my friends were involved in construction at the time I decided to try to become a male model. I was also in construction and when I told them about my plans they didn't really know how to react. Some thought it was a cool move, should bring in a lot of money, others thought that I was mad giving up my job to persue this full time.
To be honest, I was looking forward to getting out of construction anyway, and was planning into moving into a slightly different line of work (plumbing) if I wasn't successful at male modeling. I gave myself about 3 months to become a male model, and if things weren't to be, well at least I tried.

Competition to become a male model

One of the first things that became apparent to me when looking into the idea of male modeling was the fact that the competition was not as fierce as it is with the female models. I guess maybe because so many girls grow up dreaming of becoming a model and some female models have received so much celebrity and notoriety. the competition is really intense. Sure there is competition too in male modeling, and you have to be good to get on, but male modeling is definitely easier to get into than female modeling. Perhaps another sign of this is in the fact that most of us can name 10 Super Models - how many of us could name 10 male models ?

Approaching Model agencies as a male model

The approach to becoming a male model is I'm sure pretty much the same as becoming a female model .I began by trying to investigate which agencies were reputable and which were not. This was easy with the major companies but harder with the smaller ones. I phoned up a few of the less well known agencies with a few questions. I would ask them if they could give me a list of the clients they worked for and some of the male models on their books so that I could check out whether they were reputable or not.My simple rule was this. Any agency that could not or did not want to provide this information must have wanted to hide their record , so I did not per sue anything with them.

Success as a male model

I was fortunate enough to find a placement with a great agency. There were no up front fees to worry about. This group was entirely professional. I signed an exclusive contract but it was tied down to the performance of the company, and if I did not receive a certain amount of work each year I would be released and compensated. Happily, that has not been necessary. I've received a lot of work in the commercial modeling industry.

One of the choices a model will have to make at the start of her career is the area of modeling she wants to get into. Assuming the model is deciding between fashion and commercial styles, she will then have to try to pick a photographer who can help her build up her portfolio appropriately.

Fashion Photographers

Although the distinction between fashion and commercial photography is a blurred one, if you can find a photographer who specialises in a discipline you may well find that the quality of the shoots you get are superb. TFP photographers for example may be on a limited budget and thus they may create their studio to give them the best chance of success in one of these fields. The fashion photographer for example may well have a well lit studio and may well use natural light in preference to other forms of lighting. One very good reason for this is for portrait style fashion shots the eyes are obviously extremely important. If you have a dark set then the pupils will dilate and you will see less of the color of the eye which can have a negative impact on the shot. Another area that the fashion photographer will be adept at is taking shots of extreme movement. In fashion shoots, the body is often pushed to its limit in terms of pose and movement, and the well experienced photographer can catch this movement perfectly.

Commercial Photographers

Commercial photographers may well be expert’s in areas such as catalog modeling or advertising. Their particular skill will generally be in getting a relaxed look and in the use of props which integrate naturally into the shoot. This is harder to achieve than you may think. Commercial photographers often work to tight time scales where they have to produce a lot of photographs in a short timescale. The range of expression that the model will be expected to produce is lifelike. By contrast the fashion model will also have to be adept at producing more intense expressions.

A few things to look out for

When it comes to looking out for modeling scams, it is a very good idea to be prepared. If you have little or no experience of this industry and you walk into a less than reputable modeling agency then you're in big trouble. You'll probably lose a lot of money, waste a lot of time, and end up with no modeling work. This is actually one of the better scenarios, because some modeling agencies have also been linked with sexual harassment or worse. Model Scam #1 -Up front Fees for the Model agency Of all the scams around, it has been said that up front fees is the one that has given the most cause for complaint, and the one that has featured most in attempts at litigation. Up front fees happen like this. You walk into a model agency and you tell them that you are looking to join them. They go through an often bogus selection process and tell you (after a chat with the bogus talent executive) that you have been chosen by the company.....but there are a number of fees to be paid. These fees could be for a photographer to do your portfolio, signing on fees, advertising fees etc. Our advice....do not pay

The Law governing Up front Fees in the US

As you may have guessed, this is very definitely a complex subject. Without going into too much detail, you should know that most states have extremely tight controls on registration fees, either banning them entirely or capping them at around $4.
The same is true of advertising. If the talent agency attempts to charge you the costs of advertising you, then once again, most state laws (ie Florida,Illinois,Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nebraska,Nevada,New York and others) ban requiring a prospective model to pay advertising (promotion) costs as part of the condition of signing on.
Perhaps more telling than this is the attitude of the owners of the leading reputable agencies, who advise models never to pay up front fees. The point is that model and talent agencies are employment agencies who should be taking commission from the earnings they receive from you. If you look at it this way, then charging up front fees is something like an admission of failure, and admission that the company cannot provide enough work to its models to survive. If up front fees are requested, I advise you to find a different agency.

Model Agency Scams - The Photographer Scam

This is another very common scam that a lot of my friends have complained about. This scam works like this. You are told that you have been 'selected' to join a model agency. You are then told that you'll need a portfolio of decent quality and you are given the name of a photographer who you are required to go to ' because the agency can be sure of his quality'. So where's the scam there..sounds reasonable enough? Well what you don't know is that the agency and the photographer are splitting the fees, and the fees themselves are considerably higher than they should be. Remember, a model agency should never charge you advertising fees. If you need professional photos for a portfolio, then go to an independent photographer and always pay him directly. If your agency insists that you go to a particular photographer as a condition of joining, then as far as I'm concerned, you are being scammed

Talent Agency Scams - The Modeling Convention Scam

So you've joined an agency, and your agent advises you to go to a modeling convention. Once again, sounds like a good idea Well maybe until you see the cost of these modeling conventions. And then you think of the reasoning. Why did my agent suggest I go on a modeling convention to further my career, and increase my exposure. Isn't that what he's supposed to be doing? The truth is, that some unscrupulous agents receive a commission for anyone they persuade to go on this convention. If you're pressured this way , get a new agency.

Bikini Models

To begin with, I ought to say that I had very little experience of modeling and I had absolutely no idea how to get into modeling. To me, modeling was basically either appearing on a calendar or on a runway - I hadn't even thought of any other modeling styles and didn't even really consider what sort of money I'd get for my work.

Finding work as a bikini model

I wrote to a few local model agencies in my home town and received a few polite replies but nothing that gave me much hope of getting registered. So I decided to take matters into my own hands - I thought I could seek out work as a bikini model myself. By this time I had learnt that bikini modeling was a form of glamour modeling.

Modeling Forums

I could find no reference to bikini modeling in the local press etc so I turned to the internet and began visiting the modeling forums that dealt with this kind of thing. I became aware that glamour or bikini modeling tended to be less mainstream and the work available was often with independent photographers. When I found a photographer who by chance was from my hometown on one of these forums I thought that this may be my chance

Semi Pro Photographers

The guy on this forum was called Gareth. He seemed pleasant enough when it came to our first email exchanges. He said that he was interested in photographing bikini models to expand his portfolio and he said that he would be capable of doing professional looking photographs which would enhance my chances of getting on in the industry.
This sounded great, so I decided to go for it. I told a friend what I was doing and she stopped me immediately. She said it was far too risky, this guy could be anyone. She had heard about several sexual harassment cases and told me not to go. We eventually agreed that the best idea would be for me to take a male chaperone - so that's what I did.

The
Photographers Place

Before going to see the photographer I had not told him that I was going to be bringing along a chaperone. I guess I hadn't thought it necessary. When we both arrived at his house at the appointed time however he seemed really shocked to see a 6 foot guy next to me. The smile on his face wiped off as he saw us both standing there, He seemed like he didn’t know quite what to do, but he hesitantly invited us in and told us to come into his studio
His house was a serious mess, there was stuff everywhere. If Bob hadn't been with me I would have run straight out of the door. The guy was clearly extremely shady but it was kinda fun to stay in his house and see what would happen seeing as I had a guy twice his size to look after me!
The photographer went off to prepare the studio. He seemed extremely flustered. We followed him into another room (which was meant to be the studio) and as you've probably guessed, it wasn't a studio at all - there wasn't even a camera there.
At this point Bob said it was basically time to leave. He told the guy that he wasn't a photographer at all - he was a creep using that forum to try to trick women into coming into his house. We notified the police after we left but couldn't really say much.

Me and Bikini Modeling

So that was pretty much my attempt at bikini modeling - one go and now its no thanks to any more! If I pursue modeling, it will be through mainstream reputable agencies and nothing else .I'm not saying that all independent photographers are bad - many are genuine I'm sure. But it is such a risk when you have to find out. Whatever you do, be with a chaperone at all times and then you'll be fine.

Is It A Scam?

"A local agency is TOTALLY interested in me, but they want me to take classes before they will sign me."
SCAM: Even if they are a legit agency, chances are you will be asked to take and pay for classes that are totally unnecessary (costing up to $1,000). Every agent in the world will tell you that you DO NOT NEED CLASSES to be a model. Even if they promise they will sign you after taking their courses, move along. If you are worthy of representation, you will find it.

"I was approached by a guy in the mall who says he is a scout for a local agency. Is this legit? "
MAYBE: Did he offer you a business card? If so, do some homework on the agency. Legitimate scouts will often frequent malls to look for new talent. Scouting services presenting themselves as agents frequent malls as well. A scouting service is NOT an agency and they are generally quite expensive, so do your homework.
SCAM: If he tried to lure you to his automobile or into a secluded part of the mall, chances are it is not only a scam, but a DANGEROUS scam! Anytime you are approached, ask for a business card and tell him that you will give his agency a call. Do NOT, under ANY circumstances go anywhere with a stranger!

"An agency wants to sign me, but they say I need to pay for photos, a make-up artist, a stylist and comp cards. That is almost $1,000! "
LEGIT: There are definite start-up costs in this business. Great photos and comp cards are a MUST for getting your image out to clients. This is an area where you don't want to skimp! If you can't afford the $750 - $1,000 it takes to get started, talk to your agent. Sometimes, they will front you the money.
SCAM: If they force you to go to an in-house photographer, it is probably a scam. The agency is either getting kick backs or is making all of their money off of lousy, expensive, photographs and NOT by getting jobs for their models. Most agencies will provide you with a list of reputable photographers they work with. Keep in mind that in smaller markets, there may only be one or two photographers in town that an agency feels is worth shooting with.

"I read a classified ad in the paper that said a company was looking for models and offered good pay. Is this a good opportunity?"
SCAM: Do you know how many women out there long to model? A legitimate agency will receive hundreds of potential models a week. They do not need to advertise and they certainly would not do it in the classifieds. Ads such of this can be disguising everything from escort services to adult videos to 900 number operators.
LEGIT: Some designers and department stores post classifieds seeking models for local work, particularly in the area of fit modeling.

"I placed second in a local talent search. The sponsoring agency is very impressed with me and they want to give me a chance. The only problem is that the signing fees are huge and/or they want me to take their classes, first! "
SCAM: If you have to directly pay the agency anything to get started, RUN! This is not a good business to be involved with. Why? If they are making money by charging their future employees money, why should they bother to present you to clients or find you work?
The only fees you should ever pay to get started are to the photographers, stylists, make-up artists, and comp card people you work with.

"I heard on the radio that a model and talent search is coming to town. They say that scouts from big agencies will be there. They didn't mention any costs, but I am not sure if attending is a good idea. "
MAYBE: The jury is still out on talent searches like IMTA, New York Model Contracts, Visions, ProScout, and the like. Yes, legitimate agents do attend these events. Yes, you might be discovered at one of their events. Yes, it is a good place to learn a few things, talk to industry professionals, and hone your skills. However, many of the models that are discovered at these events would have been discovered if they had merely attended open calls or done mail-ins.
Make no mistakes; this is NOT a free opportunity. They will request a fee to attend the "real" search (usually $500 to $15,000). You may be model material, but if they don't need your particular look at the time the search is conducted, you are out of luck. Another thing to keep in mind is that not all of the agencies they say will be in attendance are guaranteed to be there. It is always a good idea to call ahead to make sure that plus-size model scouts will be there.
Generally, agents who attend these events are being paid to be there including lodging, food and transportation. They are instructed by the convention holders that all they need to do is recruit, let's say 20 girls to continue to the paid event. This means that if only one girl catches the eye of an agent, he/she has to tell 19 other girls that they have potential and should return to the main event. Do you want to be one of the girls filling a quota?

"A company contacted me asking me to pay to be on their web site. They say that agencies use their site all the time and have found lots of new faces. Is this a good investment?"

MAYBE: As someone who owns a site like this, I can honestly say that agencies do use the Web to find new girls and have used this very site to do so. However, not every listing service is created equally. Who are their clients? What are their search features like (do you really want to be lumped in with a bunch of skinny girls)? Does the fee include aggressive marketing to agencies? Do they allow you to link to your photos from other sites? Gather all of the information you can before making an investment. Many listing sites are extremely expensive ($500 for one photo and some stat info). Be sure what you are buying is worth it!
